Landscaping, Hardscaping and Land Clearing in Beaver

Much of Beaver is steep, stony hillside. Federal soil maps put about three quarters of its land on slopes of 15 percent or more. That leaves many yards with no flat spot for a patio and no safe way down the slope. Beaver Creek runs north through the community, and some low lots along it sit in a FEMA flood zone.

Veridian Corp is a landscaping contractor serving Beckley and southern West Virginia, and Beaver is part of our service area. We design and install landscapes, and we build the hardscapes that make a sloped yard usable. We also clear land and plow snow for homes and businesses. Retaining Walls and Steps on Beaver's Stony Hillsides

The biggest soil unit mapped inside Beaver is the Layland-Dekalb-Guyandotte complex, on 35 to 70 percent slopes. The federal soil survey rates it extremely stony. These soils drain well, and in places sandstone or shale sits within about three feet of the surface.

That ground shapes the work. A patio base or a wall base often means digging through rock, then building back up with compacted gravel. Soil maps also show cut-and-fill ground around Beaver. Fill behaves differently from native soil under a wall or a drive.

On a steep yard, a retaining wall can turn one slope into a level terrace. Drainage stone behind the wall lets water out. We have built a retaining wall with lights in Beaver. A tall wall may also need an engineer's design and a county permit.

Homes and Roads Around Beaver

Beaver is a Raleigh County community a short drive southeast of Beckley, with 1,129 people at the 2020 Census. Blue Jay sits inside its census boundary, with Glen Morgan and Tilden just outside. Census survey estimates put the median year built at 1978, and about one home in five dates to the 2010s. Most homes are single-family houses, and about a quarter are mobile homes.

Ritter Drive carries US 19 and WV 3 through Beaver toward Shady Spring. Airport Road runs north to Raleigh County Memorial Airport. Interstate 64 and the West Virginia Turnpike both cross parts of Beaver. Little Beaver State Park sits on Grandview Road, with 562 acres and an 18-acre lake.

On a lot above the road, outdoor steps of stone or pavers make the climb to the door easier. A gravel driveway that washes out can be regraded and topped with number 57 stone. A newer home on a raw lot may need beds and sod, plus Green Giant arborvitae for privacy.

Do You Need a Permit for a Retaining Wall in Beaver?

Beaver has no city government, so Raleigh County's offices handle building and zoning there. The Raleigh County Building Code Office in Beckley issues building permits under the county's building code.

The county exempts a retaining wall up to two feet above grade, unless it holds up added weight. A taller wall needs a county building permit. Even an exempt structure needs a pre-application, so the county can check zoning and floodplain rules. Starting work before the permit is issued doubles the building permit fee.

On a corner lot, county zoning keeps a wall or hedge to 3 feet near the intersection. State law calls for an 811 call at least two business days before any digging. The county office answers permit questions for your address, and we point you there.

Drainage and the Hardscape Season in Beaver

Raleigh County rules say runoff from new development has to leave a lot where it left before. Grading that turns water away from a house still has to let it leave the lot at the same spot.

NOAA's weather station for Beckley sits at Raleigh County Memorial Airport, on the high ground north of Beaver. Its normals show about 56 inches of snow a year and about 107 nights at or below freezing. That freeze and thaw is why a patio or a walk needs a dug-out base of compacted stone.

October is the driest month at that station, and the median first fall freeze comes October 21. We build hardscapes well into late fall. When winter sets in, we switch to snow plowing for driveways and parking lots.

Beaver FAQ

Questions We Hear Around Beaver

A few of the questions we hear most around Beaver. If yours is not here, call or text and ask.

Call (304) 237-1212

Is Beaver, WV part of your service area?
Yes. Beaver is part of our service area, along with Beckley and the Raleigh County communities around it. We take on landscaping, hardscaping, land work and snow plowing there for homes and businesses. Call or text (304) 237-1212 to set up a free estimate.
How do I find out if my Beaver lot is in a flood zone?
FEMA maps flood zones along Beaver Creek and Little Beaver Creek, plus a stretch of Glade Fork. About 9 percent of the land inside Beaver's census boundary sits in FEMA's 1 percent annual chance floodplain. You can look up an address on the state's WV Flood Tool, or ask the Raleigh County floodplain office. Grading or filling in that zone needs a county floodplain permit.
What does landscaping cost on a hillside lot in Beaver?
The slope and the rock under the yard drive much of the price. On a hardscape job, a retaining wall's height and the drainage behind it matter a lot. Machine access and hauling off rock or brush add to it. We look at the job and put a free estimate in writing, and financing is available.
Do you plow snow in Beaver?
Yes. Snow plowing is our winter work, for driveways and parking lots at homes and businesses. Most of the snow at the airport weather station falls from December through March. Call or text (304) 237-1212 to set up a seasonal arrangement.
Can you clear a brushy lot in Beaver before a build?
Yes. We do land clearing with our machinery, then grade the ground for a yard or a gravel driveway. Stumps can be ground below grade or pulled on the clearing job. Disturbing an acre or more needs a state stormwater permit, and the state puts that on the owner.
