Hardscaping
We design and build hardscapes for homes and businesses: paver patios, walkways, outdoor steps, retaining walls and fire pits. Landscape lighting and plantings tie the pieces into one finished yard.

Hinton, the Summers County seat, climbs the hillsides where the Greenbrier River meets the New River. NRCS soil maps put more than half the city on slopes of 15 percent or more. On that terrain, some yards meet the sidewalk at an old stone or brick retaining wall. Over time those walls lean, and the steps through them settle and crack.
Veridian Corp is a landscaping contractor, and Hinton is part of our service area in southern West Virginia. Beckley sits at the center of that area, about 29 road miles west by I-64 and WV 20. In Hinton we offer landscape design and installation, and we build hardscapes like paver patios for homes and businesses. Call or text (304) 237-1212 for a free estimate.
Tell us about the patio, wall, planting or clearing job and where the property is. We look at the job and put a free estimate in writing.
Hinton grew as a Chesapeake and Ohio railroad town, and its streets climb the hill from Front Street. Census estimates date about 4 in 10 homes here to 1939 or earlier, and the median home to about 1950. The city's plan describes average-size homes on smaller lots, with most of the land already built on. Census permit data show about two new single-family homes in Hinton from 2021 through 2025.
The largest soil unit on NRCS maps of Hinton is a stony silt loam on 30 to 70 percent slopes. It is channery, which means full of flat rock pieces, and soft red shale often sits about three feet down. At NOAA's Bluestone Lake station, just south of town, the low hits freezing on about 104 nights a year. On ground like this, we set outdoor steps and walkways on a compacted, drained base.
Hinton's city code tells owners to hold back earth with a wall when needed to protect others or the street. We build block and stone retaining walls with drainage and backfill behind them. Hinton's zoning code requires a permit for a retaining or privacy wall over four feet tall. It also asks that bare cinder or concrete block on those walls be faced or painted.
FEMA maps about four miles of the New River inside the city limits, and the Greenbrier River joins it here. A rough sample of those maps puts about a third of the city, river channel included, in the 100-year floodplain. The city's plan says parts of Avis and Bellepoint sit in that floodplain. Neither has flooded since Bluestone Dam was built, though Greenbrier Drive takes water when the rivers run high.
Hinton's flood plain ordinance counts grading, filling and excavation as development. Inside the Flood Plain District, a site plan goes to the Building Inspector for approval before that work starts. In the floodway itself, the code allows no work that would raise the flood level. These flood plain permits come on top of a regular building permit.
On the high river flats, NRCS maps Kanawha fine sandy loam, a well drained soil laid down by the river. We plan grading and drainage work around those rules. The Building Inspector can say what applies to your lot.
Downtown Hinton is a National Register historic district, with brick streets and many houses with porches on both floors. The district takes in Front Street and the railroad, plus blocks of Temple Street and James Street. Exterior work you can see from a street needs a certificate of approval from the Hinton Historic Landmark Commission. The city code says no building permit is issued and no work begins until that certificate is approved.
The application asks for sketches or drawings of site work, such as walls, walks, lighting and patios. The city's 2018 design guidelines name brick as the district's most common masonry, with sandstone in many foundations. For paved surfaces, they accept brick, stone or masonry units laid in a variety of patterns. They also ask owners not to turn front yards into parking pads.
For a downtown house, we design the patio or walk with you to suit the house and the block. The Commission and the Building Inspector at City Hall answer questions about the review.
Hinton's zoning code asks that the land around any use be landscaped, apart from walks, drives, play areas and parking. Apartments and businesses next to homes add screening, and screen plantings must not block the view of drivers or walkers. Street trees and park trees fall under the city's tree ordinance. It asks for a City Council permit before anyone plants or removes one.
In a commercial district, the building permit needs a site plan that shows the landscaping and screening. Parking lots are set off from the street by a raised curb, a planting strip, a wall or another barrier. We work for businesses as well as homes, and a commercial site gets the same free estimate in writing.
Hinton sits near 1,460 feet, almost 1,000 feet lower than Beckley, and its growing season runs longer. NOAA puts the median last spring freeze near April 10 at Bluestone Lake and April 22 at Beckley's airport. We plant Green Giant arborvitae for privacy screens and beds of seasonal color, with mulch and soil delivered and installed.
