Hardscaping
We design and build hardscapes for homes and businesses: paver patios, walkways, outdoor steps, retaining walls and fire pits. Landscape lighting and plantings tie the pieces into one finished yard.

MacArthur sits on the plateau just southwest of Beckley, at about 2,430 feet. The NRCS soil survey puts more than half of its land on slopes of 15 percent or more. In many yards, shale or sandstone lies about three feet down. On ground like that, rain cuts ruts in a gravel drive, and a level patio can mean digging into rock.
Veridian Corp is a landscaping contractor serving Beckley and southern West Virginia, and MacArthur is part of our service area. We design and plant landscapes, and we build retaining walls that turn a steep bank into usable yard. We also lay paver patios in different patterns, each on a compacted base. The biggest soil unit in MacArthur is Clifftop channery silt loam on 25 to 35 percent slopes. Channery means the soil holds thin, flat chips of shale or sandstone. The survey maps another 12 percent of the land as very stony Highsplint soil on 15 to 35 percent slopes.
Much of the gentler ground is a Clifftop and Nallen mix on 8 to 15 percent slopes. Both soils drain well, and both usually reach rock within about three feet. Under Clifftop the rock is soft and weathered, and under Nallen it is hard sandstone.
A wall footing or a patio dig can reach that rock, so we look at the ground first. NOAA normals for the Beckley airport station show more than 100 nights a year at or below freezing. A compacted stone base under pavers and drainage behind a wall help both handle the freeze and thaw.
MacArthur took its name from General Douglas MacArthur in 1942. Fitzpatrick Road runs through the community past Fitzpatrick Park, a county softball complex that first opened in 1952. The West Virginia Turnpike crosses MacArthur too, and Exit 42 meets Robert C. Byrd Drive (WV 16) there.
Census estimates put the typical home's build year at 1973. About two in three homes went up before 1980, and only about one in ten in 2000 or later. About three in four are single-family houses, and about one in four is a mobile home. Owners live in about 84 percent of the occupied homes.
For all of unincorporated Raleigh County, the Census permit survey counted 49 new single-family homes in 2025. Most MacArthur yards are long settled, and a front walk poured in 1973 is now more than 50 years old. We replace worn walks and stoops with paver walkways and stone steps on a compacted base. On a hillside lot, new steps make the climb from the drive to the door easier.
Whitestick Creek and Piney Creek both run through MacArthur, and FEMA studied about two miles of each here. By a rough sample of FEMA's maps, about 6 percent of the land sits in the 100-year floodplain. That is the zone with a 1 percent chance of flooding in any year.
Inside that zone, Raleigh County requires a floodplain permit before grading or filling. Its flood plain ordinance counts both as development, the same as a new building. The FEMA map panels for MacArthur date from September 29, 2006.
Raleigh County's stormwater rules also say runoff should exit a developed site where it exited before. Our excavation and grading work slopes a yard away from the house and sends water along its old path. We look at downspouts and low spots before we set a patio.
MacArthur is unincorporated, so Raleigh County sets the rules here. The county Building Code Office in Beckley issues building permits under the 2018 International Residential Code. Ask that office what applies to your lot before work starts.
Under the county code, a retaining wall more than two feet above grade needs a building permit. A lower wall that holds extra weight above it, like a driveway, can need one too. Even exempt structures need a county pre-application for zoning and floodplain review. Starting without a required permit doubles the building permit fee.
State law says anyone who digs or grades calls 811 at least two business days ahead. Disturbing an acre or more for a build takes a state stormwater permit, and that is the property owner's job. Plan for that before land clearing starts on a large tract.

We build block and stone retaining walls that hold back a slope and give you level ground. The drainage and backfill behind the wall go in with the block.

We build outdoor fire pits of block and stone, plus outdoor fireplaces with chimneys. The patio and seating walls around them go in with the same plan.

We build paver walkways and sidewalks on a compacted stone base. We also set outdoor steps and stone steps on the sloped yards around Beckley.

We take down dead and storm-damaged trees with machinery and haul the wood off. Stump grinding can follow, so the ground is ready for grass or a planting bed.
