Hardscaping
We design and build hardscapes for homes and businesses: paver patios, walkways, outdoor steps, retaining walls and fire pits. Landscape lighting and plantings tie the pieces into one finished yard.

Crab Orchard sits on the plateau about six road miles southwest of Beckley, at roughly 2,290 feet. Federal soil maps put close to half of its land on slopes of 15 percent or more. Under the gentler ground, shale or sandstone bedrock often sits about three feet down. So a patio or a wall here starts with the slope and the rock.
Veridian Corp is a landscaping contractor, and Crab Orchard is part of our service area in southern West Virginia. Beckley sits at the center of that area, and Robert C. Byrd Drive (WV 16) links the two. Here we design and plant landscapes, and we build retaining walls and paver patios for homes and businesses. About 2,400 people lived in Crab Orchard at the 2020 Census. Census Bureau estimates say the typical home there was built around 1964. About 8 in 10 went up before 1980. Nearly all are detached single-family houses, and most are owner-occupied.
New houses are few. The Census permit survey counted 49 new single-family homes for all of unincorporated Raleigh County in 2025. So most landscaping work in Crab Orchard starts with a yard that is already there.
If a front walk has cracked or the steps have settled, we replace them with paver walkways and outdoor steps. We plant new beds and lay sod, with mulch and soil delivered and installed. For privacy along a property line, we plant a row of Green Giant arborvitae.
The biggest soil unit in Crab Orchard is a Clifftop and Nallen mix on 8 to 15 percent slopes. Both soils are well drained, and both formed from shale or sandstone that weathered in place. NRCS data put soft bedrock about 35 inches down in Clifftop and hard sandstone about 34 inches down in Nallen.
About a third of Crab Orchard is mapped as rubbly or extremely stony soil on 15 to 70 percent slopes. Much of it is Layland soil, formed in rock and soil that moved down the hillsides. On benches and foot slopes, Laidig soil has a dense layer about four feet down that slows water.
Digging for a wall or a patio base can hit rock, so we plan for it before work starts. Where a yard drops off, a retaining wall holds the bank and gives you flat ground. In Raleigh County, a retaining wall more than two feet above grade needs a county building permit. A shorter wall can need one too if it holds up extra load, like a driveway.
Crab Orchard Creek runs east across the community. FEMA studied about four miles of it here, plus a mile and a half of Piney Creek. FEMA's maps show a high-risk flood zone and a regulatory floodway along parts of these creeks. By a rough sample of those maps, about 4 percent of the community lies in the 100-year floodplain.
In a mapped flood area, Raleigh County requires a floodplain permit before development. Its flood plain ordinance counts grading and filling as development. Check an address on the state's WV Flood Tool, or ask the county's Floodplain Management office. The FEMA map panels in effect there date from September 2006.
The county's stormwater rules ask that runoff leave a site where it left before the work. Our grading and drainage work slopes the yard away from the house and sends water down its old path. We look at the low spots and the creek side before a patio or a bed goes in.
Crab Orchard is unincorporated, so Raleigh County handles permits and zoning there. Building permits come from the county Building Code Office in Beckley. Zoning and floodplain questions go to the county's planning offices, and each can tell you what applies to your lot.
On a corner lot, county zoning keeps a wall or a hedge to three feet near the intersection. That rule matters when you plan a privacy row along the road. We place the row so drivers at the corner can still see.
State law says anyone who digs or grades calls 811 at least 48 hours ahead, not counting weekends and holidays. That covers a homeowner too. Clearing and grading for a build that disturbs an acre or more needs a state stormwater permit. The state makes the property owner responsible for getting it.
