Hardscaping
We design and build hardscapes for homes and businesses: paver patios, walkways, outdoor steps, retaining walls and fire pits. Landscape lighting and plantings tie the pieces into one finished yard.

Fayetteville sits on the edge of the New River Gorge, just south of the gorge bridge on US 19. The town's own plan says most homes here were built before 1970. If your yard still has the steps and walls that came with the house, they may be due for work. Lots that touch national park land also carry their own clearing rules.

Census figures show a town of older single-family homes. About 86 percent of homes are detached houses, and the median home was built in 1968. About three in four went up before 1980, and about one in ten in 2000 or later. On an older lot, the job might be new steps to the door or a wall to hold a slope.
Downtown and the homes around it form the Fayetteville Historic District, listed on the National Register with over 120 buildings. The town's permit sheet says work in the district needs the Historical Committee's approval before it starts. In the single-family zoning district, a lot must be at least 10,000 square feet and 75 feet wide. The town's plan adds that some vacant lots fall short of those sizes.
The town's plan counts about 100 short-term rentals inside town limits. Census permit data show just 2 to 5 new homes a year in town from 2021 to 2025. The plan calls the town mostly built out, so new homes will likely fill vacant land like Tank Hill. On a wooded lot, clearing and grading come before any yard work.
Inside town limits, the most common soil unit is a Clifftop and Nallen mix on 8 to 15 percent slopes. NRCS data put bedrock about three feet down in both, soft shale in one and hard sandstone in the other. When a patio or wall needs a cut into the hill, rock that close can slow the dig. That digging time is part of the written estimate.
About half the land inside town limits maps on slopes of 15 percent or more. The town's plan says the steep ground sits mostly along the New River. Back from the rim, a tilted yard can still push water toward a house. A block retaining wall with drain stone behind it can hold a level patio or bed on that slope.
About 2 percent of the town sits in FEMA's mapped floodplain, along the New River and creeks like House Branch. The town's plan lists stormwater as a challenge. It says the town is replacing culverts in the House Branch basin to stop flooding. The town's permit form even asks whether a project will change surface drainage.
The National Park Service owns a large piece of land inside town limits, north of WV 16. The town's zoning sets a Scenic Overlay on land within 200 feet of that park-owned ground. No new development may happen in the first 100 feet. From 100 to 200 feet out, the overlay limits what can be built and how it looks.
The tree rule matters most for clearing work. Native trees and shrubs within 25 feet of a lot line that touches park land may not be cleared. Dying or diseased plants are the one exception. Before any tree removal near that line, confirm where it runs and ask the town's zoning office.
The overlay also shapes patios and plantings. Terraces and other outdoor areas there must be screened with native plants and placed to protect views from park land. Construction calls for native materials like wood and stone, in earth-tone colors. So a patio near the park starts with stone and earth tones, and the zoning office has the final word.
Fayetteville's zoning ordinance has its own lighting rules. Outdoor lights must be low intensity and shielded, with no light cast upward except feature lighting. Flood lights are not allowed in the single-family or multi-family districts. Uplights on trees must aim away from homes and throw no glare onto streets or nearby lots.
Low, shielded path and step lights fit those rules. The ordinance also calls for underground wiring to outdoor fixtures where practical. We install landscape lighting with the hardscape, so wiring can go in while the patio or wall is built. A new circuit at the house is an electrician's job.
Screening walls and hedges can reach 4 feet in the front yard and 6 feet behind the house's front line. Trees are left out of those two caps. At street corners, anything inside the sight triangle is capped at 2.5 feet. Ask the zoning office how a row of Green Giant arborvitae counts on your lot.
