Paver patios built from the base up

The back door opens onto wet grass or a hill, and you want a level spot for chairs. A paver patio gives you that spot. Veridian Corp is a landscaping contractor serving Beckley and southern West Virginia. We build paver patios for homes and businesses as part of our hardscaping work.

A paver patio starts with a dug-out bed and a compacted stone base. The pavers go on top in the pattern you pick. Call or text (304) 237-1212 for a free estimate. We look at the yard and put the quote in writing.

What We Handle

  • Paver patios sized for your table and chairs or a fire pit area
  • Concrete pavers in the pattern and color you pick, with a border row if you want one
  • Old soil and roots dug out, then a stone base compacted in layers
  • A smooth, level bed of sand between the base and the pavers
  • An edge restraint along the outside rows to hold the pavers tight
  • Joint sand swept in and the pavers compacted until the joints are full
  • A slight fall built in so rain runs off the outer edge
  • Seating walls and steps built in where the yard slopes

What Goes Under a Paver Patio?

Ask any patio contractor what goes under the pavers, because the base does most of the work. Before any digging, buried utility lines get marked through West Virginia 811. State law says anyone who digs must contact 811 at least two business days ahead. Then the sod and topsoil come out, with any roots or loose rock in the bed.

The paver industry's construction guide calls for at least 4 inches of compacted base under a patio on well-drained soil. In colder climates, it says, soils that stay wet or weak need a thicker base. USDA soil maps show most Beckley yards on well-drained loamy soil over shale and sandstone. Low ground along a creek can hold water near the surface, and that calls for more base.

About 1 inch of bedding sand goes on top, leveled smooth. The guide rules out stone dust for this layer. The pavers go down inside an edge restraint and get compacted with joint sand until every joint is full.

Sizing Your Patio and Choosing Patio Pavers

A patio plan starts at the door you step out of. We size the patio around what goes on it, like a table and chairs, with room to walk around them. Then we shape it to fit the yard, square or curved.

The patio pavers we lay are concrete, made in a factory in many shapes and colors. They can be laid in patterns such as herringbone or running bond. A border row in a second color can frame the edge, and cut pavers fill the gaps along it.

A seating wall along one edge doubles as extra seats. Steps can lead from the patio up to the door or down to the lawn. A fire pit area can sit inside the patio, with a built-in fire pit at its center.

Paver Installation for Beckley's Slopes and Winters

Nearly a third of the land inside Beckley sits on slopes of 15 percent or more, USDA soil maps show. On a gentle grade, the ground is cut and filled so the patio sits close to level. On a steeper lot, a block retaining wall holds the low side, and steps lead down to the yard.

A patio still needs a little fall so rain runs off. The paver industry's guide sets the slope at 1.5 percent or more, about 2 inches over 12 feet. The fall runs away from the house, so water leaves at the outer edge. If that edge already stays soggy, the yard below may need grading first.

NOAA's long-term numbers for Raleigh County Memorial Airport show about 56 inches of snow a year. The low drops to freezing or below on more than 100 nights a year. Pavers are separate pieces, so a paver patio can flex a little as the ground freezes and thaws. If a spot settles, those pavers can come up and go back down on a fixed base.

FAQ

Paver Patios Questions, Answered

Common questions about paver patios around Beckley and the rest of southern West Virginia. If yours is not here, call or text and ask.

Call (304) 237-1212

How much does a paver patio cost?
Size sets most of the price, then the base work under it. A sloped yard that needs a wall or steps adds to the job, and so do curves and pattern cuts. Call or text (304) 237-1212 for a free estimate, and we put the quote in writing. Financing is available.
Should I pick a paver patio or a concrete patio?
A paver patio is many separate pieces on a stone and sand bed. One spot can be lifted and reset on its own. We also pour a plain concrete patio, which is one solid slab and often costs less up front. The choice comes down to the look you like and what you want to spend.
Do I need a permit for a paver patio in Beckley?
Inside city limits, ask the City of Beckley Code Enforcement Office before work starts. That office handles zoning and building questions for the city. The Beckley Sanitary Board also runs a land disturbance permit for digging and grading in the Beckley watershed. Outside the city, Raleigh County's Building Code Office or your town's code office answers it.
Can a paver patio go in during the fall?
Yes. Our hardscape season runs into late fall, and fall is Beckley's driest season in NOAA's long-term numbers. The paver industry's guide says base stone should not go in frozen or on frozen ground. Winter is our snow season, so patio work picks back up when the ground thaws.
What upkeep does a paver patio need?
Sweep it and rinse it now and then. Joint sand can work out of the joints over time, so sweep in fresh sand to top them up. Pull any weeds that take root in the joints. Where sand keeps washing out, the paver industry's guide says stabilized joint sand may help.
Can you design the patio and the plantings around it?
Yes. We plan the patio with you, from its size and shape to the paver pattern. The beds and plantings around it can be part of the same landscape design.
