Excavation and Grading in Beckley, WV

Excavation and Grading · Beckley, WV

Level ground that sheds water before anything gets built

A patio or a new lawn is only as good as the ground under it. Veridian Corp works as an excavation contractor for that ground across Beckley and southern West Virginia. We cut the high spots and fill the low ones, then shape the grade so water runs off. The next layer starts on firm, level soil.

Our excavation work covers site prep and grading for outdoor projects and yards. We dig out and grade the ground under a paver patio, a retaining wall, outdoor steps or a shed pad. We also level uneven yards and regrade wet spots so rain moves away from the house. We handle the cleanup and hauling too.

What We Handle

  • Site prep under patios, walls, steps and pads
  • Rough grading to set the shape of a lot or a yard
  • Finish grading before sod or plantings go in
  • Leveling and reshaping uneven or sloped yards
  • Drainage grading that moves water away from the house
  • Cut and fill to bring a sloped site to grade
  • A number 57 stone base for pads and driveways
  • Cleanup and hauling when the grading is done

Site Prep for Patios, Walls and Pads

Site prep is the dig and grade work that comes before a patio or a wall gets built. We strip the sod and topsoil and cut the ground to depth. Then we set the slope, and the stone base goes down on firm soil.

A wall needs a level, solid trench under its bottom row of block. A shed or equipment pad needs firm, level ground a little wider than the footprint. We set the grade for each one so the build starts level and square.

If the site is wooded or grown over, land clearing comes first, then the stumps. Grading starts once the ground is bare. A job that disturbs an acre or more needs a state stormwater permit. West Virginia puts that permit on the property owner.

How Do You Grade a Yard So Water Runs Away From the House?

When water pools by the foundation, the grade is often the cause. The same goes for a soggy low spot or a gully cut down the yard. We find where the water comes from and where it can go before any dirt moves.

Then we reshape the ground so it falls away from the house toward a safe low point on the lot. On a wide yard, a shallow swale can carry the water around the house. Fill soil goes in where the grade has sunk, and it gets packed in layers.

Finish grading comes last. We rake the soil smooth for the sod and plantings of our landscaping work around Beckley.

Land Grading on the Rock and Clay Around Beckley

The USDA soil survey maps about half of Beckley's ground as Clifftop and Nallen soils. Clifftop has a subsoil heavy with silt and clay, with flat chips of shale mixed in. Both soils sit on bedrock that is usually 20 to 40 inches down.

That rock shapes the work. Under Clifftop the rock is shale, siltstone or fine sandstone, and under Nallen it is hard sandstone. A deep cut for a wall or a level pad can reach it. We check for signs of rock when we look at the job.

Slope is the other half. The survey maps about a third of the land inside the city on slopes of 15 percent or more. On those lots, grading often pairs with a retaining wall or terraces that hold the cut.

FAQ

Excavation and Grading Questions, Answered

Common questions about excavation and grading around Beckley and the rest of southern West Virginia. If yours is not here, call or text and ask.

Call (304) 237-1212

How much does excavation and grading cost?
The price follows the size of the area and how much soil has to move in or out. Rock, steep ground and tight access add machine time, and a stone base adds material. We look at the job and put a free estimate in writing. Call or text (304) 237-1212 to set it up.
What kind of excavation work do you take on?
We take on site prep and grading for outdoor projects and yards, for homes and businesses. That covers the ground under patios, walls, pads, drives and lawns. Septic systems, wells, house foundations, utility trenches and ponds are work for other trades.
Can you level a sloped yard?
A gentle slope can often be cut and filled into a flatter yard. A steep one usually needs a wall or terraces to hold the cut, and rock can limit the depth. We look at the slope and lay out the options in the written estimate.
What goes under a gravel pad or a driveway?
We grade and pack the ground first, then spread a base of number 57 stone. How deep the stone goes depends on what will sit or drive on it. For a whole new drive or a rutted old one, see our gravel driveway work.
Who calls 811 before the grading starts?
West Virginia law counts grading and digging as excavation. Whoever does the digging must call West Virginia 811 at least 48 hours ahead, not counting weekends and holidays. That gives member utilities time to mark their buried lines.
Do I need a permit to grade my yard in Beckley?
Inside the Beckley watershed, which reaches past the city limits, grading falls under the Beckley Sanitary Board's erosion rules. Most jobs up to 5,000 square feet take a site registration, and bigger ones take a land disturbance permit. Work in a mapped flood zone also takes a floodplain permit from the city or the county. Outside the watershed, the county or town office answers the permit question, and we point you there.
