Paver Walkways and Outdoor Steps in Beckley, WV

Walkways and Steps · Beckley, WV

A Safe Way to Your Door, Even on a Hillside

A paver walkway gives you a firm, level path from the driveway to the door. It replaces the muddy track worn across the grass and the slick slope with no safe way down. Many yards around Beckley sit on a hillside, so the path often needs outdoor steps too. We build paver walkways and sidewalks, and we set stone steps into the slope.

Veridian Corp designs and builds walkways and steps for homes and businesses. Beckley sits at the center of our service area, which reaches from Summersville to Princeton. Walkways and steps are part of our work as a landscaping contractor in Beckley. Call or text (304) 237-1212, and we look at the job and put a free estimate in writing.

What Goes Under a Paver Walkway?

The base under a paver walkway does most of the work. We dig out the soft topsoil and build a base of crushed stone, compacted in layers. Paver industry guidance calls for at least 4 inches of compacted base over well-drained soil. In cold climates, it calls for a thicker base where the ground stays wet or weak.

About an inch of bedding sand goes over the base. The concrete pavers go down on top in the pattern you pick. An edge restraint holds each side, and sand swept into the joints locks the pavers together. The finished walkway gets a pitch of at least 1.5 percent so rain runs off.

Most Beckley yards sit on well-drained silt loam over shale or sandstone, often within about three feet. Digging a base there can turn up rock and flat stone fragments. On a slope, the walkway pitches so rain runs away from the house. Where it meets a paver patio out back, the base and the grade carry straight through.

Outdoor Steps and Stone Steps for Beckley Hillsides

The federal soil survey puts about a third of the land in Beckley on slopes of 15 percent or more. On ground like that, outdoor steps carry the walkway up the hill. We set stone steps into a hillside and build steps up to a door or down to a patio.

Steps can also be built into a retaining wall on a sloped lot. The wall holds the hill, and the steps climb through it. Even risers matter most, since a foot expects each step to match the last one. A long climb is easier with a landing partway up.

Beckley and Raleigh County have both adopted the 2018 International Residential Code. For stairs it covers, risers top out at 7 3/4 inches and treads run at least 10 inches deep. In one flight, the tallest riser can be no more than 3/8 inch taller than the shortest. Whether a set of garden steps falls under it is the local office's call.

How Does a Beckley Winter Affect Walkways and Steps?

NOAA's 1991 to 2020 normals for the Beckley airport show about 56 inches of snow a year. The low hits freezing on more than 100 days a year. Water trapped under a walkway can freeze and push pavers out of line. A thick, well-drained base and a steady pitch give that water a way out.

Outdoor steps get the same base and pitch as the walkway. A step that heaves even a little is easy to trip on. Water that pools on a tread turns to ice.

Paver guidance also says base stone should never go down over frozen ground. Fall is Beckley's driest season in NOAA's normals, and we build hardscapes into late fall. Winter is our snow season.

FAQ

Walkways and Steps Questions, Answered

Common questions about walkways and steps around Beckley and the rest of southern West Virginia. If yours is not here, call or text and ask.

Call (304) 237-1212

How much does a paver walkway cost?
The size of the walkway and the pavers you pick set most of the price. Steps on a slope add base stone and labor, and rock under the surface slows the dig. We look at the job and put a free estimate in writing, and financing is available. Call or text (304) 237-1212 to set it up.
Should my front walkway be pavers or concrete?
We build both, so it comes down to the look you want. A paver walkway comes in patterns, and a single paver can be lifted out and reset if it shifts. A plain concrete walkway is one poured piece with a simpler look. Our page on concrete walkways and sidewalks covers the poured side.
Do I need a permit for a walkway or outdoor steps?
It depends on the address, so check with the office that covers it before work starts. In unincorporated Raleigh County, the county code exempts most sidewalks up to 30 inches above grade from a building permit. The county still asks for a pre-application to check zoning and floodplain rules. Inside Beckley, ask the City of Beckley Code Enforcement Office about your walkway and steps.
Can you add lights along the walkway and steps?
Yes. We install low-voltage path and step lights with the walkway and steps. Lights on the risers or beside the path show each edge after dark. New circuits or house wiring are work for a licensed electrician.
Does walkway installation need an 811 call first?
Yes. West Virginia law says anyone who digs or grades calls 811 at least 48 hours ahead. Weekends and holidays do not count toward that window. The member utilities then mark their buried lines before the digging starts.
Do you design the walkway too?
Yes. We design and install, so you can start with an idea or a photo you like. We lay out the route with you and pick the pavers and the pattern together. Then the plan goes into a written estimate.
