Brush Clearing for Overgrown Fields and Fence Lines

A yard or field left to grow wild fills up with briars and saplings. Before long, you cannot walk through it. Our brush clearing cuts that growth out with machinery and pulls the roots, so the ground opens back up.

Multiflora rose is a thorny shrub that grows 10 to 15 feet tall. West Virginia's Division of Forestry says it can form thickets you cannot get through on hillside pastures and fence rows. WVU Extension calls autumn olive one of the most common invasive brush species in the state. It can reach 20 feet and form dense thickets in pastures.

Fence line clearing opens up the edges of your land. We clear the brush and saplings grown up along a fence or a property line. You can see the line and reach it again.

Lot Clearing for a New Home or a New Yard

Lot clearing gets a piece of ground ready for what comes next. We take out the brush and the trees in the way, and the machine pulls the stumps and roots. Then the debris gets loaded up and hauled off.

When we finish, the ground is open and you can see to the edges of the lot. Where a stump is ground instead of pulled, stump grinding takes it below grade and the hole gets filled.

Many Beckley lots sit on a slope. NRCS soil maps put about a third of the city's land on slopes of 15 percent or more. On a cleared lot, grading and site prep shape that ground for the build. A new gravel driveway can follow up to the homesite.

What Rules Apply to Land Clearing Around Beckley?

In the Beckley watershed, the Beckley Sanitary Board issues land disturbance permits. Its rules count clearing and grubbing as land disturbance, and grubbing means pulling out roots and stumps. The watershed reaches past the city limits, so ask the Board about your address.

The Board sorts jobs by size. Under 5,000 square feet is a site registration, and bigger jobs need an erosion and sediment control plan. Its rules also say ground cover may not be stripped more than 20 calendar days before grading.

Inside Beckley, work in a flood hazard area needs the city's floodplain permit. Raleigh County's rules count grading in its floodplain as development that needs a permit. The WV Flood Tool shows whether a property sits in or near a floodplain. Each office answers for its own area, and we point you to the right one.

FAQ

Land Clearing Questions, Answered

Common questions about land clearing around Beckley and the rest of southern West Virginia. If yours is not here, call or text and ask.

Call (304) 237-1212

How much does land clearing cost?
The price depends on the size of the area and how thick the growth is. Steep ground and tight access take more time, and so do big trees and stumps. We look at the job and put a free estimate in writing. Our land clearing cost guide covers market numbers per acre.
What happens to the brush and debris?
We load it up and haul it off the property. If you plan to burn a brush pile of your own, state law limits when. West Virginia names March 1 to May 31 and October 1 to December 31 as forest fire seasons. In those months, outdoor burning is allowed only between 5 p.m. and 7 a.m.
Will the brush grow back after land clearing?
Brush grows back from live roots left in the ground. WVU Extension says autumn olive can sprout new growth from a root system left alive. On a clearing job, we pull stumps and roots out with the machine. The extension service says any sprouts that show up afterward need follow-up treatment.
Do I need a state permit to clear land in West Virginia?
A big job may need one. West Virginia's Department of Environmental Protection says disturbing one acre or more takes a stormwater construction permit first. When one person owns the project and another does the work, the DEP says the owner gets it. State law also says anyone who digs or grades calls 811 at least two business days ahead.
Do you clear land for businesses and coal mine sites?
Yes. Commercial ground and coal mine sites are part of our land clearing work. On those sites, we clear the brush and overgrowth and haul the debris off. Call or text (304) 237-1212 and tell us about the site.
