How Much Does Stump Grinding Cost in West Virginia?
National cost guides put grinding the first stump at about $120 to $500. Many price by the inch, at $2 to $6 per inch of diameter. Each added stump on the same visit runs about $30 to $75. A minimum charge of about $80 to $160 covers small jobs.
These are market numbers, not our price list. None of the national guides we checked breaks out West Virginia, so treat them as a starting point. Rock and slope add time, and both are common around Beckley. See our stump grinding service for how we handle stumps across southern West Virginia.
What Goes Into a Stump Grinding Price?
Most quotes start with the width of the stump. Contractors measure the full trunk base at ground level, one guide explains. The other line items stack on top of that.
| Line item | Published market range |
|---|---|
| Grinding the first stump | $120 to $500 |
| Price per inch of diameter | $2 to $6 |
| Minimum charge | $80 to $160 |
| Each added stump, same visit | $30 to $75 |
| Hourly rate for many stumps | $100 to $200 an hour |
| Root grinding or root removal | $75 to $200 an hour |
| Chip cleanup and hauling | $1 to $4 per inch of diameter |
| Stump pulled or dug out whole | $175 to $700 |
These ranges span the typical figures in six national cost guides, updated in 2025 and 2026. The newest puts the national average at $272 per job. Another prices digging a stump out lower, at $80 to $190, plus a $150 to $350 backhoe minimum.
Hourly pricing shows up on big jobs. Guides say contractors switch to the hour for many stumps or hard sites. Cleanup is often its own line, so ask whether hauling the chips is in the quote.
How Does Stump Diameter Change the Price?
Here is how two national guides price stumps by diameter. Both work out to a few dollars per inch before any minimum.
| Stump diameter | One national guide | A second national guide |
|---|---|---|
| 12 inches | $24 to $60 | $30 to $70 |
| 24 inches | $48 to $120 | $50 to $150 |
| 36 inches | $72 to $180 | $70 to $220 |
| 48 inches | $96 to $240 | $100 to $290 |
| 60 inches | $120 to $300 | $120 to $360 |
The first guide adds a $100 to $150 minimum, and the second adds $80 to $160. So a small stump often costs the minimum, not the per-inch math. Measure each stump across its widest point at ground level before you call, the second guide advises.
Price data from a national hiring marketplace runs higher. It reports about $267 to $494 for one stump, by size.
Wood counts too. Dense hardwoods like oak or maple take longer to grind and cost more, a third guide says. A fourth adds $50 to $150 for a hardwood stump. The second guide puts extra-large stumps at $300 to $800 each.
Do Rock and Slope Around Beckley Raise the Price?
They can. NRCS soil maps put about a third of the land in Beckley on slopes of 15 percent or more. On the gentler ground, shale or sandstone bedrock often sits about three feet down. The steep hillsides around town are mapped as extremely stony.
One national guide says rocky soil slows the work and can raise the cost by 50 percent or more. The same guide notes that local prices tend to reflect a region’s usual soil. A second guide says sloped or rocky soil takes extra time with the grinder.
Access matters as well. A stump on a steep slope or behind a narrow gate costs more to reach, a third guide notes. Tell the estimator how a machine gets to each stump.
Grinding also works below the soil line, where buried lines can run. West Virginia’s dig law covers any work that moves material in the ground with tools or equipment. It calls for notice to 811 at least 48 hours ahead, not counting weekends and holidays.
Grinding or Pulling: Which Costs More?
Pulling usually costs more. Three national guides put full stump removal at about $175 to $700. Grinding the first stump runs about $120 to $500 by comparison.
Grinding chips the stump below the soil line and leaves the deeper roots in the ground. A university extension service says grinders can work from flush with the ground to over a foot deep. What stays below can take several years to break down, another extension service notes.
Pulling takes the stump and its roots out whole. It leaves a bigger hole that takes more topsoil to level, one guide says. It also clears room for a new tree in the same spot.

What Is Root Chasing, and When Is It Worth Paying For?
Root chasing means following the big surface roots out from the stump and grinding them too. A standard grind leaves those roots in place, one national guide notes. Guides price root work by the hour, at about $75 to $200 an hour.
It earns its cost where roots cause trouble. One guide says root removal is mostly needed when roots damage property or create a trip hazard. Roots under a walkway, or in the way of a new patio, fit that test.
What Does Filling the Hole Cost, and What Grows There Next?
Grinding leaves a hole of wood chips mixed with soil. Guides put chip cleanup and hauling at about $1 to $4 per inch of diameter. One guide lists topsoil at $10 to $50 a yard and installed sod at $1 to $2 a square foot.
One extension service advises hauling off the chips and filling the hole with good topsoil before grass goes in. Wood mixed into soil ties up nitrogen as it breaks down. The spot also settles as buried wood rots, so mound the topsoil a little high.
Another extension service prefers sod, though seed can work. It also calls for a slow-release lawn fertilizer. WVU Extension says cool-season grass can be seeded almost any time of year. Early to mid-September is the prime window, it adds.
Planting a new tree instead? An extension forestry specialist advises setting it at least three feet from the old stump. Some trees also send up sprouts from the roots left behind.
How Do You Get a Stump Grinding Quote Around Beckley?
Have these answers ready before the estimate visit:
- How many stumps there are, and how wide each one is at ground level
- What each spot is for next, such as grass or a planting bed
- Whether the chips get hauled off or stay as mulch
- How a machine reaches each stump, including gate widths
- Whether surface roots near a walkway or wall need chasing
If the tree is still standing, ask for tree removal and the stump on one quote. One national guide suggests handling the stump when the tree comes down. For a wooded lot full of stumps, see what land clearing costs per acre.
