Veridian Corp builds outdoor fire pits and outdoor fireplaces in Beckley and across southern West Virginia. A fire pit is a ring of concrete block or stone on a level, compacted base. An outdoor fireplace adds a firebox and a chimney that carries the smoke up. Both are part of our hardscaping work.
A fire pit often sits inside a paver patio, with room for chairs all the way around. We design the fire area and install it in one plan, with the seating and the paths around it. We look at the job and put a free estimate in writing. Call or text (304) 237-1212.

Fire pit installation starts with an open, level spot away from the house and clear of overhanging branches. West Virginia law says to call 811 at least two business days before digging starts. One block maker's guide then calls for 3 inches dug out, filled with crushed gravel and packed down hard.
The ring goes up one course at a time, and each block sits level both ways. Another block maker's guide says a steel insert must be used inside its wall block. Without it, the guide warns of serious injury or property damage. Gravel then fills the bottom of the pit.
A low seating wall can wrap part of the ring and add seats around the fire. Low-voltage landscape lighting set in that wall or along the path helps people find their footing after dark.
An outdoor fireplace is a firebox with a chimney on top, so it weighs far more than a fire pit. One outdoor fireplace maker's manual calls for a pad of steel-reinforced concrete under it. In colder places, it says the footing may need to reach below the frost line to stop frost heave. For a taller build, the manual calls for an engineer to size the footing.
Beckley sits about 2,400 feet up. Federal climate records show more than 100 nights a year at or below freezing at the Beckley airport. Federal soil data put shale or sandstone bedrock within about 3 feet under much of Beckley. A footing dig here can hit rock, so we plan the footing before the first block goes up.
That fireplace manual lines the firebox with split firebrick and high-temperature mortar. It counts a chimney cap as part of a finished install. It also warns that a poor install can let rain leak in around the chimney.
Fall is fire pit season across Beckley and southern West Virginia. Federal records put the Beckley airport's first fall freeze by about October 21 in half of all years. West Virginia law also makes October 1 through December 31 a forest fire season.
During fire season, state law allows a small, attended fire for warmth or cooking without a burning permit. That holds unless a burning ban is in effect. The law asks for all grass and debris to be cleared for 10 feet around the fire. Fall leaves pile up fast, so rake them back before you light it.
Burn dry, split wood seasoned at least six months, and keep trash and treated wood out, as the EPA advises. At the end of the night, let the fire burn down to coals and smother them with sand or dirt. One block maker's guide wants a working hose close by. It also says water on a hot pit can wear out the steel insert and block early.
