How Much Does a Paver Patio Cost in West Virginia?
National cost guides put a professionally installed paver patio at about $8 to $25 per square foot. One national guide that surveys its customers puts the average at $3,800 for a 280 square foot patio. Most of those homeowners spent between $2,400 and $7,000.
None of the national guides we checked publish a West Virginia paver price. These are market numbers, not our price list. Slopes and rock move the number on a southern West Virginia lot, and so does winter. A written paver patio installation quote prices the yard you actually have.
What do national cost guides list by patio size?
This table comes from that customer-survey guide, updated in June 2026.
| Patio size | Area | Typical range | Average |
|---|---|---|---|
| 10 by 10 feet | 100 sq ft | $800 to $2,500 | $1,800 |
| 12 by 12 feet | 144 sq ft | $850 to $4,300 | $2,600 |
| 12 by 16 feet | 192 sq ft | $1,200 to $5,800 | $3,500 |
| 16 by 16 feet | 256 sq ft | $1,500 to $7,700 | $4,600 |
| 16 by 20 feet | 320 sq ft | $1,900 to $9,600 | $5,700 |
| 18 by 24 feet | 432 sq ft | $2,600 to $13,000 | $7,800 |
Two other national guides land close by, at $8 to $24 and $10 to $25 per square foot. In the customer-survey guide, labor alone runs $4 to $11 per square foot, or $50 to $80 an hour. Sand and gravel for the base add about $1 per square foot in materials.
Why can a West Virginia patio price differ from the national average?
Federal wage data for May 2025 put West Virginia’s landscaping and groundskeeping workers at a median of $15.50 an hour. The national median was $18.82, and the Beckley metro area’s was $14.80. That gap can show up in the labor line of a quote.
One national guide says simple designs in lower cost areas land closer to $8 a square foot. A complex design or a higher cost area lands closer to $25.
The ground here can push a job the other way. Federal soil surveys map much of Beckley in rocky silt loam and loam over shale and sandstone. In the common plateau soils, that rock sits about three feet down. About 32 percent of the land inside the city maps on slopes of 15 percent or more.
Winter plays a part too. Federal climate normals put Beckley’s low at freezing or colder on about 107 days a year. Freeze and thaw is hard on a patio base that is too thin.
What drives the price of a paver patio?
Size sets the starting point. Bigger patios cost more in total, but often less per square foot. Simple rectangles cost the least to build.
The base. The paver industry’s trade association calls for at least 4 inches of compacted base on well drained soil. It adds that wet or weak soils in colder climates need a thicker base. The pavers then sit on about an inch of bedding sand. Ask every bidder how deep the base will be.
Slope and access. A level patio on a hillside lot takes cutting, fill or both. National guides say ground that is not level or easy to reach drives up labor. One guide prices leveling or regrading a yard at $1,000 to $3,250. A slope often calls for a seating wall or steps. Wall pricing is in our guide to what a retaining wall costs.
Pattern and borders. Curves and detailed patterns take more cutting and more labor time, national guides say. A contrasting border adds another row of pavers to set along the edge.
Material. Concrete pavers sit at the lower end of these ranges, and natural stone runs higher. One guide lists a natural stone patio at $15 to $35 per square foot. Another says flagstone can reach $50.
Tear-out. Removing an old concrete patio adds about $2 to $6 per square foot in one national guide.
A fire pit area. A built-in fire pit runs $300 to $1,400 in the customer-survey guide. It puts the low end on pits built along with the patio. Our fire pits and outdoor fireplaces page covers that work.
Drainage. Most patios get a slight slope so rain runs off, and that is part of the price. Beckley’s stormwater utility counts a patio as impervious surface. Rain runs off it instead of soaking in, so plan where that water goes.
The line items below come from 2025 and 2026 editions of national guides.
| Line item | Published market range |
|---|---|
| Installed paver patio | $8 to $25 per sq ft |
| Labor alone | $4 to $11 per sq ft |
| Sand and gravel base materials | About $1 per sq ft |
| Leveling or regrading a yard | $1,000 to $3,250 |
| Removing an old concrete patio | $2 to $6 per sq ft |
| Built-in fire pit | $300 to $1,400 |
| Natural stone patio | $15 to $35 per sq ft |
| Plain poured concrete patio | $4 to $12 per sq ft |
Is a paver patio worth it over plain concrete?
National guides list a plain poured concrete patio at about $4 to $12 per square foot installed. So a paver patio costs more up front. The guide behind that concrete figure lists a life of 30 to 50 years for plain concrete. It lists 25 to 75 years for pavers.
Another guide says pavers are easier to repair. The pavers over a sunken spot can be lifted and set back once the base is fixed. Plain concrete fits a simple slab where cost comes first. We also pour plain concrete patios and walkways.
What should a written paver patio estimate include?
Compare bids line by line, since two bids can price very different bases. A clear estimate spells out these items:
- The patio’s size and shape
- The paver and the pattern
- Any border
- The base depth and the stone used for it
- The edge restraint that holds the pavers in place
- How water will drain off the patio
- Any seating walls or steps
- Tear-out and hauling of old material
Before any digging, West Virginia law requires notice to West Virginia 811 at least 48 hours ahead. Weekends and holidays do not count. Inside Beckley, permit questions go to the City of Beckley Code Enforcement Office.
