How Much Snow Does Beckley Get?

Beckley sits about 2,420 feet up, and its winters bring real snow. NOAA's 1991 to 2020 climate normals put the Beckley airport at about 56 inches a year. January and February each average about 15 inches. December brings about 11, and March close to 9.

Lower ground gets far less. Hinton sits on the New River, nearly 1,000 feet lower than Beckley. NOAA's station at Bluestone Lake, near Hinton, averages about 19 inches a year. That is about a third of the airport's total.

At the airport, an inch or more of new snow falls on about 17 days a year. A snowfall of 5 inches or more comes on two or three days. Snow covers the ground an inch deep or more on about 34 days. The season can open in October and run into April.

Snow Removal Services for Parking Lots and Mine Roads

Under Section 17-9-1 of the West Virginia Code, the Division of Highways provides snow removal in all 55 counties. Interstates and the US and West Virginia routes come first. School bus routes come next. Those priorities cover public roads, so a business lot or a mine access road needs its own plow.

A business needs its lot open for customers and staff. We plow parking lots and the drives into commercial properties. A seasonal arrangement covers the lot for the whole winter.

We work with coal mine operations and keep their sites clear and clean. In winter, that work includes plowing their access roads and lots. The rest of the year, we do land clearing on mine sites and other commercial ground.

Snow Plowing for Gravel Driveways

A plow can push gravel off a drive along with the snow. The Federal Highway Administration's gravel roads guide names winter plowing as one cause of gravel moving to the shoulder. We build gravel driveways too, so we plow them with the stone in mind.

Before the ground freezes, mark the edges of the drive with tall stakes. Flag culverts and big rocks as well. Once the snow gets deep, the stakes show the plow where the drive ends.

Snowmelt is hard on gravel too. The same guide says water collects on a gravel surface with no crown and softens it, and ruts can follow. If the thaw leaves your drive rutted, we can regrade it and top it with number 57 stone. That work falls under our gravel driveway repairs.

FAQ

Snow Plowing Questions, Answered

Common questions about snow plowing around Beckley and the rest of southern West Virginia. If yours is not here, call or text and ask.

Call (304) 237-1212

How much does snow plowing cost?
The price depends on the size of the driveway or the lot and how steep it is. Where the property sits matters too, and so does room to pile the snow. We look at the property and put a free estimate in writing. Call or text (304) 237-1212 to set it up.
Do you plow residential driveways?
Yes. We plow home driveways, gravel or paved, as well as business lots. Tell us how long the drive is when you call. Then we look at it and put the quote in writing.
Can you clear snow after a big storm?
Yes. Clearing after a storm is part of our snow removal work, for drives and lots alike. Call or text and tell us where the property is and how big the area is.
When should I set up snow plowing for the winter?
Set it up in the fall, before the first storm. Snow can come early: the Beckley airport averages about an inch and a half in October. By December, the month's average climbs to about 11 inches. Call or text early, and we will look at the drive or the lot.
Where does the plowed snow go?
We push it to the edges and pile it on the property. Tell us where you want the piles when we look at the job. A good spot sits off the road and clear of drains.
Which towns do you plow in?
Beckley sits at the center of our service area. It reaches across Raleigh County and farther out into southern West Virginia. See the towns we serve, or call or text (304) 237-1212 to ask about your road.
