Is the bank behind the house sliding toward the driveway? Does the yard tilt too much to use? A retaining wall holds that ground back and turns a slope into level space. Veridian Corp builds retaining walls in block and stone for homes and businesses across Beckley and southern West Virginia.
We build single walls that hold a driveway, and tiered walls that step a bank down into planting beds. A retaining wall often comes first in a hardscaping project, since it makes level ground for the rest. Call or text (304) 237-1212 for a free estimate, and we put the quote in writing.

West Virginia law says anyone who digs calls 811 at least two business days ahead. Once the buried lines are marked, we dig the trench for the base. Most Beckley yards sit on well drained silt loam over shale and sandstone, often within about three feet. So the dig for a wall's base can turn up rock.
Wall block makers' install guides call for a packed stone base at least 6 inches thick. The first course goes below grade, 6 inches or a tenth of the wall's height, whichever is more. Each course after that sets back a little, so the wall leans into the hill.
Behind the block, the guides call for clean drainage stone and a perforated drain pipe at the base. Beckley sees more than 100 nights a year at or below freezing, by NOAA's climate normals. That is one reason the base and the drainage matter so much here.
Inside city limits, the City of Beckley Code Enforcement Office handles building permits. The city has adopted the 2018 International Residential Code and reviews plans before it issues a permit. Its pages give no height for retaining walls, so ask the office about your lot. Ground work over 500 square feet in the Beckley watershed can also need a Beckley Sanitary Board permit.
Unincorporated places such as Shady Spring, Daniels, Crab Orchard and Beaver go by Raleigh County rules. The county exempts a wall up to two feet above grade, unless it carries a load like a driveway. A taller wall needs a permit from the Raleigh County Building Code Office. Even an exempt wall starts with a county pre-application for zoning and floodplain checks.
Wall block makers' guides often set about 3 feet as the limit for a wall without reinforcement. In those guides, taller walls get layers of geogrid mesh and an engineer's design. One guide adds tiered walls and weak soils to the engineer's list. Reclaimed mine ground and old fill are common here, and they behave differently from native soil under a wall.
The federal soil survey puts about a third of the land in Beckley on slopes of 15 percent or more. In Beaver, the share is about three quarters. On ground like that, tiered walls turn one tall bank into shorter walls with level beds between them.
Where a path climbs the hill, we build outdoor steps right into the wall. A low seating wall can edge a patio or a fire pit area. We plant the beds on each tier as part of the landscape design.
We built a retaining wall with lights in Beaver. Low-voltage wall lights set into the block make steps and edges easier to see after dark.
