Hardscaping
We design and build hardscapes for homes and businesses: paver patios, walkways, outdoor steps, retaining walls and fire pits. Landscape lighting and plantings tie the pieces into one finished yard.

Princeton is an older town in a creek valley. The typical home here was built around 1953, by Census Bureau estimates. The city's own plan says much of Princeton is at risk of flooding from Brush Creek and Daves Fork. In older yards, walks crack and heave, and low spots can hold water after a hard rain.
Veridian Corp is a landscaping contractor, and Princeton is part of our service area in southern West Virginia. Beckley sits at the center of that area, about 38 road miles north on the West Virginia Turnpike. Here we design and plant landscapes, and we build paver patios, walkways, outdoor steps and fire pits. Call or text (304) 237-1212 for a free estimate.
Tell us about the patio, wall, planting or clearing job and where the property is. We look at the job and put a free estimate in writing.
Census Bureau estimates date about 35 percent of Princeton's homes to 1939 or earlier. About 82 percent were built before 1980. About two in three are single-family houses, and most of the rest sit in buildings with two or more units.
New houses are rare inside the city. The Census Bureau's permit survey counts one new single-family home authorized in Princeton from 2021 through 2025. So most landscaping work here starts with a yard that is already there.
The city's plan says lot sizes vary widely from one Princeton neighborhood to the next. We fit the design to the lot you have. For an older yard, we can put in new beds and sod, with mulch and soil delivered and installed. For privacy along a property line, we plant Green Giant arborvitae in a row.
FEMA maps about four and a half miles of Brush Creek inside the city limits. Glady Fork and Daves Fork run through town too. FEMA's flood maps mark high-risk zones along these streams, including a regulatory floodway. By a rough sample of those maps, about 17 percent of the city sits in the 100-year floodplain.
The city requires a flood plain permit to build in those areas, and its Code Enforcement Department issues it. The department's floodplain manager talks with owners there about flood insurance and ways to limit damage. Before a wall or a patio goes in on mapped ground, ask the department what applies. The city's Public Works Department maintains the storm drains along city streets.
Much of the low ground along the creeks is mapped as Orrville and Lobdell soils, formed in creek deposits. The NRCS rates Orrville somewhat poorly drained, so water can sit there after a storm. On ground like that, grading and drainage work comes before the patio or the new beds.
The city's plan calls the land in Princeton relatively flat, and much of it is. Federal soil maps still put more than a fifth of the city on slopes of 15 percent or more. One of the largest soils on that map is Gilpin and Berks channery silt loam. It covers slopes of 35 to 70 percent, and channery means the soil holds flat pieces of rock.
Most of the city is mapped as built-over ground mixed with natural soils. Upland soils such as Lily and Gilpin are well drained and sit over sandstone and shale. The survey puts that bedrock about 35 inches down. A dig for a wall base or a patio can hit rock or old fill.
Where a yard drops off at a bank, a retaining wall holds the slope and gives you flat ground. Each wall gets drainage and backfill behind it. A tall wall may need an engineer's design, and the Code Enforcement Department can say what the city requires.
Stafford Drive is the city's main shopping corridor, and the Mercer Mile runs through the heart of downtown. The city's 2024 ten-year plan sets design guidelines for business sites. It is policy rather than code, but it shows what the city wants to see.
The guidelines call for landscaped parking areas and building foundations. They ask for low hedges or low walls along the street edge. They also want evergreens in the lots, to break up big parking areas in every season. We build commercial hardscaping like low walls and paver walks, and we plant the beds around them.
