Hardscaping means the patios, walkways, steps, walls and fire pits built into a yard. Veridian Corp designs and installs hardscapes for homes and businesses in Beckley and across southern West Virginia. Our hardscapes start as concrete pavers and wall block in different patterns. We put them together on site, and we plant the beds around them too.
A hardscape project often centers on a paver patio, with walls, steps, a fire pit and lights around it. We design the layout and build it, so the pieces work as one yard. Call or text (304) 237-1212 for a free estimate, and we put the quote in writing.

Most hardscape projects combine several pieces. Walkways and outdoor steps tie a patio to the house and the driveway. On a hillside lot, steps make a lower patio easy to reach. Stone steps can also be built into a wall or a hillside.
Slopes are where a block or stone retaining wall comes in. A wall holds the hill back and makes room for a level patio or a planting bed. A low seating wall can ring a patio and give guests a place to sit. In Beaver, we built a retaining wall with lights.
Many patios get a built-in fire pit or an outdoor fireplace with a chimney. In Beckley, we built a patio with a fire pit. Landscape lighting in the steps and walls makes the space easy to use after dark. Some designs add an arbor over the patio.
As your hardscape contractor, we design the layout and then build it. The design starts with how you want to use the yard. We note the slope and where rainwater runs today.
Heights get settled in the design before any digging. The patio's height sets the number of steps to the door and the walls around it. The plan also sets the pitch that carries rainwater away from the house.
We build in order. Walls and drainage go in first, then the patio base and the pavers. Light wire runs before the block and pavers close over it. Plantings and mulch go in last, around the finished hardscape.
Federal soil surveys map about a third of Beckley on slopes of 15 percent or more. The most common soil there is Clifftop, a silt loam with more clay in the subsoil. In that soil, shale or sandstone sits 20 to 40 inches down, so a deep dig can hit rock.
Beckley sits about 2,420 feet up, and its winters swing above and below freezing. NOAA's 1991 to 2020 normals for the Beckley airport count 107 nights a year at or below freezing. Only 25 of those days stay at or below freezing all day. Water trapped under a patio swells each time it freezes and lifts the pavers.
That is why the base and the drainage matter most. We dig out the soft soil and build a compacted base in its place. Each surface pitches away from the house, and walls get drainage and backfill behind them. West Virginia law requires a call to 811 at least two business days before any digging starts.
