Green Giant arborvitae is a fast-growing evergreen for privacy screens. Veridian Corp delivers and plants it for homes and businesses around Beckley and southern West Virginia. We tell customers Green Giants grow 2 to 3 feet a year. They reach about 30 feet tall and 15 feet wide, so we plan each row for that size.
Each job starts with the line you want screened and what runs overhead or underground along it. Other privacy plantings can go in too, as part of our landscape design and installation work. A row can also screen a paver patio from the road or the house next door. Call or text (304) 237-1212 for a free estimate in writing.

Spacing trades a faster screen against room to grow. Trees set closer meet sooner and close the gaps faster. Set them too close, and they compete for water and light. Extension plant guides warn that crowded plants decline over time.
We set the gap between trees by how soon you want the screen closed. At about 15 feet wide, a Green Giant reaches roughly 7 feet out from its trunk. So we keep the row far enough inside your line for the branches to stay on your side.
If brush covers the line, clearing the fence line comes first. These trees get tall, so the row stays out from under power lines. Planting holes can also hit buried lines. West Virginia law says anyone who digs must call 811 at least two business days ahead.
The state extension service calls fall and spring both excellent seasons for tree planting. For fall, it says to plant about two months before the first average frost. Six weeks ahead is the minimum, so roots can grow before the ground freezes.
NOAA's climate normals put the first fall freeze at the Beckley airport around October 21 in a typical year. By that rule, fall planting around Beckley lands in late August and early September. In spring, planting follows the last freeze, which comes around April 22 at the airport.
The extension service also says container-grown and balled-and-burlapped trees can go in most of the year. The exception is a very hot, dry spell. Fall still has a slight edge, since roots keep growing until the ground freezes.
Federal soil surveys rate most of the soils around Beckley as well drained. In well-drained ground, each tree goes in as deep as its root ball is tall. The state extension service warns that clay soils are common statewide and often drain poorly. On a wet line, it suggests a raised bed about 12 inches above grade so roots do not drown.
We build those beds with soil we deliver and install, then mulch them. Per the extension service, mulch goes 3 to 4 inches deep and stays about 2 inches off each trunk. We also deliver and install rock for the beds. Spring color can fill a bed in front of the screen.
Lights can finish the job. Uplights at the base of the row aim up into the branches after dark.
